Zazen Breaths
Problem
You have difficulty relaxing before making your putts.
Cure
Establishing a consistent preputting routine will help you gain confidence and therefore help relax your body before putting. One great step to add to your prestroke routine is to add in Zazen breaths to your routine.
Therapy
Zazen breaths are when you take one or two long, deep breaths. It should feel as you are breathing, that all of the tension is wiped clean out of your body. Keep your eyes slightly open as you look down a few feet away from you at the green. Inhale through your nose as you keep your mouth closed, with your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Open your mouth a little and slowly exhale as you completely empty your lungs. Practice breathing like this a couple of times each day at work or at home when you are feeling stressed. You should notice that you are able to increase your concentration and calm your nerves within two breaths. This will help clear your mind out on the green so you can gain a better feel and focus on your putts. You will be surprised how much easier it is to accurately see the line and speed before making your stroke. This will not only help you become more centered and focus as you are putting but can help you with tee box jitters as well.
