Tip From the Archives
Wrong Club
Problem
You overestimate your abilities or take less of a club than you should. This might be because you are playing with someone who can get the same distance with a 7 iron when you need to use a 3 iron.
Cure
Do not let your ego ruin a fun game. Use the club you really need to get the job done. You will look worse over all if you have a higher score.
Therapy
To help learn or determine the proper distances for each club or to just par more holes, try using one more club than you think is necessary. Think about what club you need to make it to your target then take one club more and you might be surprised to see that you made a better shot. This will be especially true on colder or wet days.
Please be also aware that beside the shot shaping abilities of some experienced players also different loft of your clubs and different balls can easy add or reduce the distance by up to 10 yards. Many club manufacturer or club designers changed the loft of their iron clubs to support their marketing messages that their iron go further. This did result that finally the loft of the iron 6 is the same as the loft of an iron 5 some years ago.
I fully agree with Kuno above as far as different lofts being applied to the same club by different manufacturers. For example, I have recently changed irons. My old PW was 48*, my new one is 45*. Three degrees can be a ton of difference in distance especially when you are hitting an approach and you have water in the front and trouble in the back. Best thing you can do is find a range with accurate distance markers and really get to know your distances with your clubs and swing.
I used a 6 iron, the ball was deep in the rough, 5 foot away from a pond and the green was on the other side. I was thinking if i should take the PW and then i went for a slow but firm swing with the 6 iron. I went on the green one put away from my par. Its true.. just use what works
