Tip From the Archives
Windy Greens
Problem
You are playing on a course in the wind and are unsure if it will change the way the ball will roll on the green.
Cure
The wind has a unique ability of making a small error become a huge mistake. Take an extra minute to determine what direction the wind is blowing on the green before you commit to the aim and stroke length of your putt.
Therapy
Be certain you have stable footing at set up. If you are putting downwind, it will reduce the affect of the break and make it feel almost impossible to get the ball to stop rolling. In this case, it might be better to ignore the break because the wind will almost push the ball straight down the line for you. Putting into the wind will slow the ball down. Plus, if you make a miss read the green, it will amplify this mistake. So, if you miss it a little to the right, it will make it roll even further to the right. Crosswind putts will cause the ball to roll more in the same direction of the wind. This will be especially tragic if it causes the ball to roll off line due to an unexpected break.
Interesting information to file away in the memory bank for the future.
