Tip From the Archives
Wide and Powerful
Problem
You want to gain more power and distance.
Cure
You can gain a few extra yards by lowing your hands on the grip and stand a little further from the ball or use a longer driver. For an extra boost of power, lengthen your impact zone by leading your swing with the target side of your body with your trailing side being whipped through at impact.
Therapy
Take a wide stance with your weight evenly distributed onto both of your heels. Place the ball an inch further in your stance to help encourage a wider and lower swing. Grip the club a little lighter and your hands slightly ahead of the ball. Focus on taking the clubhead back low in a wider swinging arc. Let the target side of your body to lead the downswing to help produce a strong weight shift. A key thought that will help lead your forward swing is to keep your forward elbow pointed towards your back hip when you make contact with the ball. Start out by making compacted swings so it is easier to focus on pointing your trailing elbow at your back hip. Once you find a good rhythm doing this, slowly speed your tempo up until you are making a full swing.
