Whoosh

Problem

You want to increase the power and velocity of your swing.

Cure

You can swing a little faster to increase power as long as you do not disrupt your tempo. Another key to gaining power is to make sure your clubface makes contact with the ball squarely at impact. Work on coordinating the movements of your body with the club as you increase the pace of your swing.

Therapy

Practice making a whooshing sound while swinging your driver for a couple of minutes to help you achieve a more powerful swing. This helps you focus on the proper feel and contact you need in order to gain distance on the course. You can practice this at the range or warming up before teeing off for the first time. People who have first tee jitters tend to do well with this warm up because it helps them release frustration and change their focus on the course. Swing the club back and forth about knee high or less and listen for the clubshaft to make a whooshing sound. You should notice the noise to occur at the bottom of your swing. Now that you have established the powerful whooshing noise, slowly work your way up to a full swing focusing on a smooth tempo while rhythmically coordinating your body with the movement of the club.
