Tip From the Archives
Walking Blind
Problem
You constantly come up short on all of your long putts.
Cure
You might not be misreading the length of the putt but are off on the way you perceive this distance at address. So, be certain to pace the shot so that you can actually feel the distance and the undulations of the green as you walk to the cup.
Therapy
Stand facing face the hole from about fifteen feet away from it. Now close your eyes and walk until you think you have walked fifteen feet. Open your eyes and look to see how close you are to the hole. If you are far away from the hole, you know you need to work on sensing distances on the green. If practicing with a friend, stand by the hole and close your eyes. Slowly walk away from the cup and have your friend tell you when you are about fifteen feet from the hole. Set a ball down between your feet and select this location to putt from. Repeat this drill several times until you feel you have improved your ability to control distances with your putts.
