Tip From the Archives

Upper Back

Problem

Your upper back muscles are too tense.

Cure

Remember to take a few minutes to stretch your back and shoulders before starting your round.

Therapy

Stand up straight while gripping a short iron in front of you with one hand on the shaft and the other near the clubhead. As you inhale, push the club out and down towards the ground. You should feel a slight stretch in your upper back. As you bring the club back up, think about trying to pinch a golf ball with your shoulder blades. Alternate between the two stretches several times before teeing off.

Put your left hand out in front of you palm upwards like a policeman stopping a car. Then place the back of the right hand against the side of the hand (little finger end). Then use the right hand to pull the left hand and arm around as though into the backswing. Don't force it. When you have held that for 5seconds.Repeat it with the other side. It will stretch both shoulders and upper back muscles. Repeat a couple of times before going near a club.
