Uphill or Downhill Putt

Problem

You wonder where you should hit the ball onto the green.

Cure

For most people, putting the ball uphill is easier than downhill. You are more likely to leave the ball closer to the flag if you miss on the first try because it is much easier for the ball to roll further away from the hole down a hill than up it.

Therapy

Aim for the front of the green if you are not familiar with the course. This is more likely to give you an uphill putt because most greens are sloped from back to front. If you cannot decide between using two clubs in order to land there, use the longer club with your hands slightly lower than usual. This will allow you to make a more relaxed swing using your normal swing rhythm. Whereas, if you were to take the shorter club you could either end up short of the green or mis-hit because you were swinging too hard to make the shot; both giving you an extra stroke on your score card.
