Tip From the Archives

Unrealistic Goals

Problem

You do not play as well as you need to play, especially in competitions. You then become irritated or angry and play even worse.

Cure

Mentally commit to the game and each shot. Accept each challenge as a fun and new experience. Set small goals for yourself every time you analyze your lie. Be honest with yourself and set realistic goals. Think in terms of your average shot with each club instead of thinking about your best shot ever made with it. When you think about your best swings with this club, it will increase your anxiety levels and set you up for failure.

Therapy

Develop your since of challenge by playing your next round with only three clubs. Be certain to chose at least one long club that you do not use very often. You will already know from the beginning the feeling of being at a disadvantage. Take this feeling and turn it into a challenge. It will be a useful skill to have in your bag the next time you are playing under pressure.
