Unintentional Scooping

Problem

You tend to scoop the ball while chipping and cannot seem to stop yourself from doing it.

Cure

Keep most of your body weight placed on your forward foot throughout the entire swing. If you allow your body to shift too much, you will stay behind the ball and scoop it.

Therapy

Take a narrow stance and set most of your body weight on your forward leg. Tilt the shaft of the club towards the flag so that the butt of the club is just ahead of the ball. Think of your forward arm as an extension of the club. This is a good image to have at set up and at impact because you want this wrist to flat while chipping. Work on swinging with your arms and chest movement in sync, as if it is one unit. Focus on keeping your wrists ahead of the clubface as you approach the ball. Strike sharply on the ball and keep your follow through short.
