Twisted Lunge
Problem
You want a more powerful swing.
Cure
Work on improving your leg strength and turning ability.
Therapy
Lunges are great for stretching and building leg strength. You can also work on developing a better turn and a better sense of balance at the same time by twisting your upper body once you are in the lunge position. So if you lunge with your right leg in front, turn your chest so that it points to the right. For a full twist, use a ball or hold your hands together in front of your chest, turn so that your left elbow passes the right leg. When you are able to make a full turn, you will notice that your left shoulder is over your right knee. In order to get the most out of your lunge, make sure your front knee is over the ankle and does not pass this point. Repeat this exercise a couple of times and then do it on the other side. Once it becomes easy for you to do, try doing the twist at the same time as you are lunging. Another great way to strengthen your legs is to return to a lunged position with the heel up on the back foot. Slowly lower your back knee to the ground. Now return to a lunge position. Continue to lower that knee to the ground until your muscles are tired.
