Towel Drill

Problem

You are not able to release the club or hinge your wrists during the backswing as you should.

Cure

This could be a sign that your grip is too strong or weak, preventing the cocking and hinging of the wrists. Test your grip to see if your swing improves.

Therapy

Wrap a towel around the grip and hit a bunch of balls. By putting a towel on your grip, you will naturally hold the grip lighter. If your grip is too weak, the club will fly out of your hands or will feel like it should. If you are seeing a better hinging of your wrists and contact, then you know you have been gripping the club too tight. Whenever you are out on the course and feel that you are gripping the club too strong, wrap a towel around the grip and swing a couple of times to remind you of the proper feel.
