Tip From the Archives
Topping the Ball
Problem
The bottom of the club strikes the top of the ball resulting in very low trajectory and unpredictable spin.
Cure
Topping can be from standing too far away from the ball, too tight of a grip, or not tilting enough at address. You may be hitting the ball late because your arms are not extended enough at impact. If your chin is too close to your chest, then you will not be able to turn properly and cause an incorrect weight shift. This will cause your body to straighten and lift the clubhead to top the ball.
Therapy
Take your regular stance, and check to see if your upper arms can touch your chest, if they cannot, then you are standing too far away from the ball. Make sure you have enough body tilt at address and try using a weaker grip. Shift your weight onto your front foot before contact to help prevent falling away from the target and topping the ball. Your arms need to make full extension during impact so that your leading arm and shaft make a straight line. It might be helpful to visualize while your arms are at about waist high, that your leading arm is extending the same way it would if you were snapping a wet towel.
