Tip From the Archives
Tilting Forward
Problem
You keep tipping towards the ball as you try to hit long drives.
Cure
If tilting is a big swing problem for you, focus on not overswinging your arms. When your arms swing too fast, it will cause your body to be pulled around from this motion and your weight will move onto your toes. This can cause a cascade of problems because your bodyweight will shift improperly, your swing path will then move outside of the target line, and then end up with a reverse pivot with a poor ball flight.
Therapy
A proper set up can help prevent this. Make sure your weight is centered over the arches of your feet and that you have enough hip and knee flex. Do not be afraid of sticking your butt out a little to help keep your weight centered properly.
If "sticking your butt out a little" comes at the expense of your pelvic tilt, be prepared for a life of lower back pain. Your core should be much better than many really are, you should be aware of the muscles making your pelvic floor, (google them) and the way these are exercised for golf is sometimes misunderstood. Apart from that, great advice.
Slow down your whole swing. Balance issues disproportionately afflict guys because of machismo, so this is more a mental state than a set-up or posture fix. Next time you are at the range, try swinging only at 50% and focus entirely on balance, rhythm and club lag. You will be surprised how far the ball goes with seemingly no effort. Then, in 10% increments, steadily add power but never more than a maximum of 80%. At all times, continue focusing on balance, rhythm and club lag. Immediately dial back the power if any of the these three components start suffering. This is what instructors mean by "swinging within yourself".
