Tight Back
Problem
Your lower back feels stiff or you feel pain when you first start playing a round.
Cure
Although stretching by twisting your lower back will help your swing, it is important to stretch your back muscles vertically. When you do, should relieve some of the pain and enable you to make a better backswing.
Therapy
Lie on your back with your knees bent. Slowly pull your knees up to the chest until you feel a gentle stretch in your lower back. You know your lower back muscles are too tight if you cannot keep your hips on the floor or if your knees separate as you do this. You can also do the Child Pose in yoga. Kneel on the floor so that you are sitting on your feet. Place your hands in front of your knees. Push your hands out in front of you until you lower your forehead to the floor. Hold this position for 30 seconds. Then try to extend your arms out a little further while keeping your bottom against the back of your ankles. Once you feel a good stretch, bring your arms to the side of your legs with the palms facing up. Hold for 30 seconds. Simply doing these stretches on a daily basis and before your round should help ease the tension in your back, reduce lower back pain and improve your turn.
As one advancing in years, who swings a club every day at home, this will be given a permanent spot on my daily routine. I have a very fluid swing and it is only my lower back which seems to give me any grief at all. Thanks for that, off to give it a try.
