Thick Rough Pin Shot

Problem

The ball is lying deep in the rough and the pin is very close to the fringe.

Cure

Remember to increase your grip pressure so the grass does not catch and turn the club. The trick to getting the ball out of the deep rough is to hinge your wrists early as you take the club back and to release them completely as you approach the ball.

Therapy

Do not use your sand wedge because it has too much bounce for this shot. So, use one of your irons or a wedge without as much bounce. The longer the grass, the more you need to move the ball back in your stance but do not place it any further back than your trailing eye. Once you have placed the ball where you want it, open your stance a little. This will make it look as if the ball is closer to the middle of your stance. The benefit of opening your stance a little is to help you dig into the grass better. Aim the clubhead at the target. Do not try to add spin to the ball by holding the clubface open, allowing the clubhead to catch and turn in the grass. Keep the image of a sharp V shaped movement to get the clubhead down and out of the grass quickly. Cock your wrist early during the backswing. It is crucial to continuously accelerate the clubhead with a full release onto the ball. It is okay to have a limited follow through as long as you hit down on the ball with really good acceleration.
