The Wristy Driver

Problem

Your swing is inconsistent or too steep when using the driver because of excessive wrist or hand movement.

Cure

This can be due to attempting a downward blow as you would with irons or because you are trying to control the clubhead into impact. You need to keep your hands and wrists quiet as much as possible during the swing. The two times while driving that you should see a little wrist movement is when the club is waist high and just before you whip the club through impact.

Therapy

It is most important to keep your hands and wrists passive during the backswing. Focus taking the club back so that the muscles in your back and shoulders control the turn. You can allow a little wrist movement when the club is waist high. Excessive movement will cause your swing to become too steep or steer the clubhead off of the swing path. Your arms and shoulders should move as one unit to bring the club down and then gravity will cause stress on your arms and hands to accelerate the club into impact. Do not try to force your hands or wrists to make a strong whipping action. Simply focus on trying to accelerate the club a little faster and this will happen naturally when you make a strong enough shoulder turn.
