Tip From the Archives

The Uphill Putt

Problem

You overshoot the hole on a long uphill putt.

Cure

Lengthen your backstroke using your normal rhythmic swing instead of increasing power to the stroke. Rather than stopping your forward swing once contact is made, try to match the distance of your backswing.

Therapy

Practice uphill putts while focusing on establishing more distance control with a longer stroke. Square the clubface to the hole as you take your normal putting stance. Tilt and turn your head so that you can focus on the hole as you work on a longer swing with good tempo. Make a semicircle line of balls about 30 feet downhill from the hole and hit each one right after the other. By watching the hole and not the ball, you will learn to properly determine the distance from the pin and the stroke needed to get there much better.
