Tip From the Archives

The Short Iron Punch

Problem

The wind is blowing into your face and you are about 100 yards from the pin.

Cure

Try a punch shot with your 9 iron to help limit the affects of the wind. The ball will fly lower than a pitch shot with a little bounce on the green.

Therapy

Take a narrow stance while placing most of your weight onto your forward foot. Place the ball off of the inside of the heel of your back foot. Limit the shifting of your weight as you take a shortened backswing with a strong shoulder turn. Pull the clubhead down sharply through the ball. Match your follow through with the length of your backswing so that the club ends up pointing towards the pin.

Thanks for this great golf tip. You describe the technique so clearly. Windy in Phoenix lately, wish I would have read this last week!
