The Restricted Swing
Problem
Your backswing or follow through is restricted due to trees, bushes, or other obstacles.
Cure
When playing golf, it is usually ideal to match your forward swing with your backswing. However, this is one of those times that you cannot; you need to only restrict your swing on the side of the obstacle for success.
Therapy
For a restricted backswing, take the club back as smoothly and far as you can. If there is only a small restriction, place your weight onto your forward foot to help keep you on top or ahead of the ball and cock your wrists early to help steepen your swing. Regardless how much your backswing is restricted, be sure that you make a complete follow through. If your follow through is restricted, it is crucial that you keep your head and lower body still. It is natural to cringe or move your head in anticipation of possibly making contact with the obstacle. Take a full backswing and accelerate during your forward swing until just before you reach the point of impact. The key thought is to maintain a smooth tempo with a limited wrist movement during your forward swing. A smooth tempo will actually help quiet your wrist movement and therefore reduce the chances that you will make contact with the object. Comfort level and safety should be considered before attempting this swing. Remember, it would be easier and safer to hit the ball back out onto the fairway than simply taking an unplayable lie for an extra stroke with no advantage.
