Tip From the Archives
The Putting Wrist
Problem
Your putts have difficulty reaching the hole because of a limited wrist hinge.
Cure
It is normal to have a wristless pendulum stroke on short and medium putts for more directional control. However, allowing the wrist on your trailing arm to hinge a little during your backswing will help increase your accuracy and distance for longer putts.
Therapy
Practice putting short putts with just your trailing hand a few times and then use both hands. By using just your trailing arm, you will be able to enhance the feeling how you naturally come to a point where a little release is necessary during the follow through. Keep your wrists firm and allow the putter to travel low to the ground. Even though this is a short putt, you will still need to accelerate through impact. As you do this using both hands, focus on controlling the stroke with your trailing hand and forearm, to encourage the natural release during the follow through.
