Tip From the Archives
The Low Runner
Problem
Needing a low and dependable shot with irons during high wind or you need to shoot under an obstacle on the course.
Cure
Use a club with less loft to reduce backspin. Take an easy swing; this will give you the distance and the lower trajectory needed to achieve this shot.
Therapy
Move the ball back in your stance and choke down on the grip. Place a little more weight onto your forward foot and widen your stance to help flatten the bottom of the swinging arc. You are likely to draw the ball left because you are flattening your swing; to help keep the shot a little straighter, you should aim both your body and clubface a couple degrees to the right of the target. Rotate your body and keep your legs still throughout the shot. Keep your hands a little ahead of the ball to help deloft the club. Do not take the club back much farther than the height of your shoulders. The idea of this swing is to move the club back low and long. You should feel as if your body is on top of the ball as you make contact.
