Tip From the Archives
The Hang Back
Problem
You want to hit more powerful drives.
Cure
Try to delay contact as long as possible so you will have more acceleration at the point of impact.
Therapy
Setup with more of your body weight over your trailing foot and with your trailing shoulder lower than the leading shoulder. Allow the trailing arm to be fairly straight so that the elbow points towards the trailing hip. At the top of your swing you want all of your body weight placed over your trailing foot. You want your chin over but not touching your leading shoulder. Your upper body should be away from the target so much that you can actually see your trailing foot at impact. Because of this Hang Back technique, the acceleration will be so great at this point that it will feel as if your arms are about to swing away from your body and into the target. Instead of thinking that your trailing side is moving through the target, focus on your leading arm pulling your trailing arm, shoulder, then body through and well past the ball. If hanging back does not feel natural to you, practice this swing by taking your trailing arm off of the club at the beginning of your forward swing.
I have trouble because I swing too hard and my trailing arm 'takes over' the swing, causing all sorts of trouble but mostly coming over the ball and slicing. I find that a swing thought of relaxing my trailing arm does wonders. Also allows me to target better also because I'm thinking about swinging through the ball towards the target rather than hitting it.
