Tip From the Archives

The Flyer Shot

Problem

You need accuracy on an elevated tee box or in windy conditions.

Cure

Instead of teeing up a ball and using your driver, try playing a 3 wood directly off of the tee box. You can roll the ball anywhere in the tee box, so do this to find a puffy lie. Having a little bit of grass behind the ball will come in between the clubface and the ball to help give you a shooter or flier shot to help keep the ball low, with limited spin, and extra roll when landing.

Therapy

Place the ball up to two inches further back in your stance from where you would play it when using a driver. If you find that it is too windy to use your three wood successfully, then switch to a 2 or a 3 iron. You will lose distance but it will help keep the ball lower to prevent the wind picking it up unpredictably.
