The Floater or Parachute Shot

Problem

You are in the rough with an obstacle blocking the green. So you need to hit the ball so that it flies high and short with a soft landing.

Cure

Use a sand wedge or your highest lofted club. Even though this is a short distance, you need to take a full and hard swing.

Therapy

Take a wide stance with most of your body weight on your back foot to help you achieve loft. The ball should be placed forward in your stance. You will need an open clubface and be sure that your hands are behind the ball at address. Cock your wrists sharply so your backswing will be steep and outside your normal swinging path. During your forward swing, you should feel as if your back hand is scooping under the ball and is leading the rest of your body to complete the swing. Remember, it is very crucial that you take a strong swing with a full finish to properly execute this shot.
