Tip From the Archives
The Feel Player
Problem
You want to develop a better feel for pitching.
Cure
A good way to understand the relationship between feel, touch, and speed is to practice without looking. Try to guess where the ball landed based on your swing, the sound and feel of contact, and how it sounded as it landed. Have a friend tell you if you were correct.
Therapy
Try pitching the ball as close as you can to the pin without looking to see where the ball rolls. You need to determine where the ball went by feeling it on your clubface. Try to tell if the ball is long or short of the hole, left of right of it, and if it had a lot or very little roll to it. Have a friend tell you if you are right, that way you do not need to look at all before making your next shot. Keep hitting several balls in a row, only pausing enough to move on to the next ball and to state where you believe were the ball landed.
