Tip From the Archives
The Correct Side of the Tee Box
Problem
You know where you want the ball to go on the course but are unsure where to tee up.
Cure
Where you hit from on the tee box can greatly affect the success of your drive. Try to notice the shape of the hole, determine the side it would be best to land on the green, and then consider what club you need to get it there. Just remember that you are allowed to tee up your ball within the Playing Ground; this is the two club length area from the front and outside of the two tee markers and you do not need to be standing within that area when starting the hole.
Therapy
Be honest with yourself, if your drives tend to fly more to the left or right, account for it as you set up. If you are right handed and you tend to fade the ball, stand closer to the right tee maker. If you are more likely to draw the ball, stand closer to the left side of the tee box. Is the tee box elevated? If so, then you need to take a longer club to compensate for the reduced distance from this shot. The next step is to consider any affects from the wind and the location of any hazards; based on the distance you achieve on average for the club, could it leave you in trouble or do you need to change your club or aim to compensate for it? Allow yourself some leeway for mistakes but ultimately focus and believe that the ball where go just where you want it to. Remember to always pick the shot that you feel most comfortable playing because this will increase your chances of success.
