Tip From the Archives
The Compact Iron Shot
Problem
When you take a shortened swing with your irons, the ball flies weakly to the right.
Cure
It is likely that you are not making enough of a shoulder turn to produce the distance and power that you normally would achieve with the selected club. This causes too steep of a swinging plane so you hit down onto the ball, causing it to fly off towards the right of the target.
Therapy
Try swinging with a broom or a club with weights on it. This will help stretch your muscles for a larger shoulder turn. To help establish a strong backswing turn, practice hitting shots so that your forward shoulder turns past the ball as you take the club back. This will help you create a powerful winding action while the clubhead will be directed on a shallower swinging plane with a flush contact.
