Tip From the Archives
The Chip Putt
Problem
You have difficulty with long putts and this is probably because you bend over more than necessary when attempting a long stroke. You are less likely to perceive the distance between your lie and pin correctly if you bend over too much. This is because you tilt your head during your pre-swing analysis and therefore your eyes while reading the green. When your eyes are aligned this way, it is too difficult to evaluate the distance accurately.
Cure
You can either stand taller to help encourage a longer pendulum putting stroke or try a chip-putt.
Therapy
A good tip to remember is that the longer the putt, the longer your backswing and forward swing should be and the taller you need to stand. A great alternative to putting is to chip with your putter, also known as a chip-putt. Grip the club, stand, and swing as if you are about to chip with a wedge. Place the ball in front of your big toe on your back foot. This ball position should allow you to hit the ball at the bottom of the swing arc. Swing with confidence and complete your follow-through so that it matches the length of your backswing. You should practice this technique a couple of times before utilizing it on the green.
