The Chicken Wing

Problem

Your ball hooked to the left side of the fairway due to a closed clubface at contact. You might have noticed that your forward arm formed into a chicken winged shape.

Cure

Take a relaxed grip to help encourage a more natural forearm rotation and release at impact. To avoid the chicken wing position, make sure you swing a more around your body. Complete your swing with a full follow though with a high finish to help prevent the flipping action that you most likely experience in the impact zone.

Therapy

Many players hook the ball because their grip is too strong. Check to make sure the V formed between your thumbs and forefingers point between your chin and your back shoulder. If the Vs are pointing towards your back shoulder or beyond, then your grip is too strong. As you start your forward swing, make sure you are leading it by shifting your weight onto your forward foot. To help eliminate your chicken wing, you need to focus on extending your forward arm. To help achieve this, finish your downswing a little lower and make a higher finish during your follow through.
