Texas Turn Down

Problem

You need to bounce the ball to the green when a bushes or trees are obstructing the lob shot or if a bump and run would leave the ball in the long rough. The Texas Turn Down can land the ball short of the green with enough over spin to bounce forward and run close to the pin.

Cure

You will need to play the ball toward the toe of your club and be sure to quickly rotate your hands and forearms through impact to close the club head through impact to prevent backspin and so the ball will kick forward after the first bounce.

Therapy

Hit the ball towards the toe about one inch away from the sweet spot. Move one inch farther away from the ball than you normally would while pulling the club an inch away with you. At the top of your backswing, your forearms will be slightly lower and your hands will roll back for the toe of the club points behind you at waist-high. Your forearms will turn over as the clubface turns toward the ground, so you will need to roll the forearms without collapsing your left wrist. The clubface will begin to close as you approach impact and focus on squaring the clubface and hitting just inside the ball. Take a divot just inside and past the ball so it will strike cleanly off the toe.
