Tension Kills the Game
Problem
When your arms are too tense, it prevents a natural flowing swing, then the ball will fly erratically and you will lose distance.
Cure
You are probably thinking too much about the mechanics of your swing, confusing power with speed, or are insecure about the shot. When you are tense, you tighten the grip, swing faster with your hands and forearms, your muscles will tighten and then you will overuse your shoulders. Your arms should be leading your swing and not the shoulders. Do not focus on the arm extension during your follow though because it will stiffen your arms and slow your rotation.
Therapy
Practice your swing in slow motion while focusing on rotating and allowing your hands and arms to swing naturally so it allows you to feel the weight of the club head. Remember, if you are able to set up with relaxed hands, it will help relax the rest of your body. Take five deep breaths, count to five while inhaling then count to five while exhaling. Focus on keeping your elbows relaxed throughout your swing and get the shaft of your club on your shoulder as soon as possible. This will help release the tension in your arms and then you will have a better release and therefore a faster club head speed. Your forward arm should rotate over your other arm with the elbow folding over it and as it does, it will feel as if it is leading the club as you swing downward. Keep your arms relaxed and focus on finishing your swing with your club on your forward shoulder.
