Tip From the Archives
Tap the Wet Grass
Problem
You are playing earlier than you are used to and find that are putting poorly.
Cure
You will need to make a more aggressive putt due to the wet grass slowing down the ball.
Therapy
Plan to spend at least 5 minutes on the practice green to see how slow the ball is rolling in the wet grass. Notice that the ball breaks much sooner than usual. The trick to playing early in the morning is adjusting to the rapid change in the speed of the greens. There is always a chance that by the time you finish the round that the grass will be dry because of the sun coming out. Suddenly you will feel that the ball is flying across the green. A good way to test this is to tap the fringe or outer edge of the green at an angle with your putter as you are waiting for your turn to see how much water is on the grass and how it feels on the putter head. Start this test at the practice green and continue on each green during your round. You might find it a helpful test to give you a good feel for the speed before making a practice stroke.
