Tip From the Archives
Stop swaying
Problem
Over shifting or swaying right during your backswing because your upper body gets outside of your right leg and your leg straightens. This can cause pull hooks, shanks, ground balls, or hitting the ball right.
Cure
You can hold your posture and turn better if you have stronger abdominal muscles. To help compensate for this weakness, place your right shoulder lower than your left and your upper body is tilted behind the ball.
Therapy
Test yourself by trying your normal stance with your abs tightened so your navel moves towards your spine and rotate your chest and shoulders around and upwards. You will lift out of position if you have week abdominal muscles. If this is the case, you would greatly benefit from exercises to increase your abdominal muscle strength. In the meantime, be sure to focus on bracing your left heel firmly into the ground during the downswing and through impact. By bracing your left heel, you will minimize any sway or tilt and the momentum of the downswing will be transferred from the legs to the hips and arms for a quick upper body rotation.
