Tip From the Archives

Stop Slicing Your Putts

Problem

You make a long, wristy stroke with your shoulders open and elbows are spread too wide. Due to this set up, you probably play the ball too far forward so the face of the putter to appears to be open and you swipe across the ball causing you to slice your putts.

Cure

A shorter backswing with your upper body moving as a solid unit will provide more control for your putts.

Therapy

Use a light grip, keep your arms against your ribs, and your elbows pointing down. Take a short backswing with your upper body, arms, and hands should moving as a solid unit to move the club back. Maintain the Y you created with your arms and the shaft of the putter as you take your forward stroke and be sure to continue to do so at least a foot after you have passed through the ball.
