Tip From the Archives
Stiff Arms
Problem
You are making poor contact with a loss of distance.
Cure
Make sure your body is staying in sync with the movement of your arms and clubface.
Therapy
Anytime you are suddenly hitting poorly, it is a safe bet to shorten your swing. This will help ensure that you are not overswinging or changing the sequence of your swing. Try swinging with your arms pressed against your chest and keep your wrists straight. Only swing the club halfway back and forward. This will draw attention to the turn of your hips and shoulders so you can synchronize their motion. Keep swinging as you slowly allow your arms to leave your chest while maintaining this synchronization. Now hit balls with only a half swing and work your way up to a three quarter swing.
Works well in practice but also can be a stop-gap fix on the course. Poor contact may be caused by the arms getting away from your body, out of sync. Try in your pre-shot routine, or between shots when you're waiting for others, to include a few short swings (half way back and through) with your elbows in close to your body to re-engrain the feeling of keeping your "swing together" without letting your arms get out of sync with your body turn. It works on the course during a round too!
