Tip From the Archives
Step Over Shot
Problem
You want more distance and you have the tendency of keeping your body weight on your back leg or you are getting under the ball too much.
Cure
Work on trying to shift your body weight forward through the shot. A great way to practice this is by swinging on a balance board.
Therapy
Some of the best players in history would step their trailing leg forward as they would complete their shot. This would help them move their weight forward and into the ball. Practice swinging your longest iron with the ball teed up. Hit the ball first and just as you are starting to turn your body towards the target, step your trailing foot forward so that you complete your shot with this foot pointed towards your target. So immediately after you make contact with the ball, you want to step your back foot ahead, almost as if you are pivoting on your forward leg. This may seem strange at first but after making a few shots, you will get used to this extreme weight shift and see greater distances with this club.
