Tip From the Archives
Stand Open
Problem
You want more distance on your tee shots.
Cure
Increase the amount of time the clubhead moves parallel to the ground by taking the club back low and slow for better drives. Try making a better hip and shoulder turn by standing open.
Therapy
People have a tendency to have a swinging path parallel to the alignment of their feet. For this technique, you want to swing along the target line and keep your clubface square. It is where you aim your clubface and not your feet that will have the most effect on the flight path of the ball. So stand open and you will allow extra room for greater hip and shoulder turn. Use your own teeing mat at the range and spray a straight line from the tee to the back of the mat. Set up to the ball by squaring the clubface before adjusting your feet into an open stance. Focus on moving mostly with your forward arm as you take the club back low and slow along the line as long as possible. Match how low you moved the clubhead along the ground before, as you approach the impact zone. The longer the clubhead remains square and low, the more you will have a powerful, flush contact with the ball. Because you used an open stance, you will be able to continue to increase the speed of the clubhead longer and make a fuller follow through.
