Stabilize the Hips

Problem

You need to improve your balance or notice that your lower body is overactive as you swing due to a loss of flexibility.

Cure

You need to stabilize your hips in order to support the rotation of your upper body. This will improve how well you direct the movement of your arms and therefore square the clubhead at impact.

Therapy

Try this drill to help feel the proper resistance that you need in your lower body to support a balanced swing. Set up so that the ball is in the center of your stance. Now turn your feet in so that your toes point towards the ball. This will narrow the space between your knees. As you swing the club, maintain this gap between your knees. Once you come close to contacting the ball, allow your back hip to fire through the shot by quickly moving your back knee towards the target. By stabilizing your lower body, it will keep the clubhead moving along the swinging path and provide an extra boost of power at impact.
