Squaring the Clubface

Problem

You need to improve your hand rotation or squaring the clubface at impact.

Cure

Reinforce the correct feeling of rotation at impact by swinging without a club.

Therapy

Set up to the ball without a club. Extend your forward arm in front of you so that your fingers point towards the ball. Now move your trailing arm back as if you would with a club and swing it down so you slap your forward hand. This is a simple way to remind you to rotate your hand to square the clubface at impact. If you notice that you are unable to make a full enough backswing during this drill without moving your forward hand then take your normal stance along the side of a golf cart or a sturdy chair. Now place your trailing hand against the backrest of the seat and then move your arm back like you normally would during your backswing. As you take your forward swing, slap your hand into the backrest. Notice how your hand is square when your palm makes contact with the backrest. This drill will also help encourage you to take a more aggressive swing and accelerate through impact.
