Square Setup Drill

Problem

You lose distance on your drives due to a severe slice. This might be from an exaggerated open stance or an out-to-in downswing with the clubface open. Another possibility that is often over looked is the driver that you are using. It could have too stiff of a shaft, be too long, or it may not have enough loft.

Cure

Setting up square or using a closed clubface angle could help reduce the chances of a slice and could help you gain up to 40 yards. You can try a driver with an offset clubhead with more loft to reduce sidespin and a more flexible shaft to help encourage you to close the clubhead at impact. You may need a shorter length to help increase the control of your swing. The shorter and heavier the club is, the more it will help improve contact with the ball.

Therapy

You can take a square set up and aim down the left side of the fairway to encourage the ball to fade. Set up so that your body is square to the target line and place the ball slightly behind your forward heel. A good drill that you should practice is to place a club on the ground behind the ball that is pointing along the target line. Now place a club in front of where your feet naturally lie but correct it so that the club is parallel to the first club. Remove the first club and place the toes of your feet against the second club. practice hitting your driver with the square set-up as much and as often as possible to encourage more control over your shots.
