Tip From the Archives
Square Putting
Problem
Your putts keep rolling towards the right or left.
Cure
Make sure you start your putt with the putterface square to the target. Be certain to maintain a proper grip pressure on the club so that it does not turn in your hands.
Therapy
To ensure you are keeping the putter square to the target throughout the entire stroke, practice by hitting two balls at once. Find a flat putting surface and set up with two balls, touching each other; this way the putterface can make contact with both balls at the same time. Use your usual stroke and watch to see how they roll. If one ball rolls farther than the other then it is a sign that you are either opening or closing the putterface based on which ball rolled the most. The ball the furthest away made contact with the putter first and had greater force applied to it at impact than the ball with the least amount of roll.
