Tip From the Archives
Spot
Problem
You over think your swing and have aiming problems.
Cure
Avoid thinking about the details about the mechanics or several phases in your swing. Over thinking about the swing technique can make you forget about aiming correctly, proper visualization, or making a smooth swing along the correct path.
Therapy
Tee the ball and stand several feet behind it, so you are looking at the target. Pick a spot on the target side of the ball about four or five feet away, that is directly on the path you wish the ball to fly. It would be helpful if there is something memorable about it or close to something that is, such as a dark patch or tall piece of grass. Focus on it. As you take your practice swing, visualize the how the ball will fly from the clubface, past your spot, all the way to the target location. Repeat it if the swing does not match what you imagined to get the ball to the target. Set up to the ball and double check your aim. Move your eyes back and forth from the ball to your spot, then the flag and back to the ball. Waggle the club along the intended line and think of this spot as you swing. Most importantly, have the confidence the ball will land at your visualized target.
