Spot Putting Control

Problem

The ball is always stopping before it reaches the hole even though you take the putter back pretty far.

Cure

A common problem for people who take the putter back for a long stroke is that they need to decelerate the club before contact. You will have better control over your distance if you take a shorter back stroke and accelerate through the ball.

Therapy

Instead of staring at the ball, shift your eyes to a point a couple of inches ahead of the ball. As you set up to the ball, imagine the path you expect the putter to make during the follow through. Select a point along this path to focus on as you take your stroke. This way you can continue to accelerate the putter head well past the ball. It will not only provide you with the speed you need but it will also help keep the putter square longer. The further ahead of the ball you select your focus point, the longer the distance you should expect from your putt. Look at a spot only a few inches ahead of the ball if it is a short putt. Look at a spot on your path that is a foot ahead of the ball if you are making a long putt.
