Tip From the Archives
Splash It
Problem
You make clean contact with the ball in the sandpit and it flies much further than desired.
Cure
You do not want the clubface to make direct contact with the ball when it lands in the sand bunker. Instead, allow the flange of the clubhead to enter the sand behind the ball and allow it to move under the ball. When done correctly, you should see both the ball and sand splash out of the bunker.
Therapy
Place the ball forward in your stance. Set the clubface open before taking your grip. Allow the shaft of the club to point straight up if you need a really short shot and therefore need plenty of loft. Because you cannot make contact with the sand until you take your swing, set up so the clubhead is hovering just over the sand an inch and a half behind the ball. Since you are used to focusing on the ball and then make contact it while on the fairway, you should focus on looking where the clubhead was hovering over the sand. This should help you avoid making direct contact with the ball. Take a full backswing and remember to keep your wrist firm throughout the entire swing.
