Tip From the Archives

Spin It

Problem

You wonder why you are getting more roll than you are used to on a new course while chipping.

Cure

The grass length and type can make a great of difference as far as loft and roll. Even with a good lie in the rough, you should expect more roll than you would from a normal fairway chip. A good rule of thumb is that the longer the grass, the more roll and the less spin you will get from your chip shots.

Therapy

Set aside extra practice time on and around the practice green to get a feel for the grass at any new golf course. Stand up taller about an inch and a half closer to the ball than usual. This adjustment will help the clubface make contact with the ball at a steeper angle for a higher trajectory and backspin.
