Tip From the Archives

Softer Pace

Problem

You have a downhill putt with a large break.

Cure

You need to consider the pace. Find the high point of the break, and notice where the pace and line come together.

Therapy

Decide what kind of pace you want. Do you need to go aggressive? What kind of second putt will it leave you if you do? Try a softer pace than normal. Make sure you take a couple of practice swings to get a good feel for the pace. Aim for the ball to almost stop at the top of the break and let the ball trickle down to the hole from there. When in doubt, set yourself up for an easy second putt.

Try putting towards the toe of the putter away from the sweetspot. This gives a less firm putt and is perfect for just such shots.
