Slower Tempo

Problem

You know that swinging at 80 to 85 percent power is ideal for gaining accuracy and distance. However, you cannot seem to do it.

Cure

Swinging at full power and then dialing it down does not work for everyone. Try short swing length swings first and work your way up to a full swing.

Therapy

Try to develop the 80 percent swing by hitting our short irons. Get a good feel for them by hitting half of a bucket of balls. Focus on keeping the clubhead moving along your line longer than usual. Now switch to your driver and hit it just as you hit your short irons. Match your tempo to what you were just using with the short iron and remember to keep the club moving along your line. You should find that when you use this same tempo, it is easier to swing at 80 percent power. Anytime you are feeling anxious and think you will kill the ball, just take a practice swing with a short iron to regain the feeling of this tempo.

I use the old Scot's melody, for the "Skye Boat Song".Works wonders for me.Hum it in your mind as soon as you have selected the club for the job.It will slow your tempo perfectly. Resulting in, on the sweetspot strikes, strong and straight.
