Tip From the Archives
Slow Release
Problem
You try to delay the hinging of your wrists or for a snap-release for more power but do not get the ball speed you desire.
Cure
Instead of delaying your release, try to gradually release the clubhead throughout the downswing. When you start your forward swing, slowly allow leading forearm to rotate the club. Once you reach the halfway point between the top of your swing and contact, you will then feel pressure to force you to uncock your wrists.
Therapy
Since the leading arm is so important in releasing the clubhead, try practicing by swinging with only this arm. This will enhance the feeling of the release. Work on trying to gradually release the clubhead with your forward hand; allow the pressure you feel that builds up in your forearm to help guide the release. Once you mastered this feeling, swing with both hands on the club and focus on rotating your forward arm as you approach contact.
i dunno - seems to me that one should use the big hinge at the elbow in the trailing arm to produce the club head speed and release rather than the little hinge at the wrist of the leading arm.
Supporting the elbow of the left arm in the backswing allows the left wrist to fall on the correct plane and the wrist cocks automatically. Then it is a matter of right elbow in towards the right hip on the downswing for a powerful and effortless contact with the ball. Don't use the word 'strike', it smacks of 'hitting at the ball' instead of through it!
I always used a big hinge but never had a feel for the release, just kinda forced it. I went outside and tried it. The weather was finally above freezing so, I gave it a shot! It made my swing seem to flow a little better because it actually felt more natural and could feel the need to release.
