Slow Down Your Swing
Problem
You are swinging your woods too fast, causing a loss of distance or an unpredictable ball flight. You might even swing so quickly that you stand up straighter during the forward swing, leading to a slice.
Cure
When your backswing is so fast, it will cause you to lose balance and straighten your legs. This will prevent you from rotating your hips and being able to shift your weight onto your forward foot during the downswing. The clubface will then open so the ball curves in from the left to the right of the target.
Therapy
A great way to practice slowing down how you swing your woods is to swing your 7 iron. Notice the distance that you achieve when using this club. Now pick up your 5 wood and try to match the distance you obtained with your 7 iron until you empty an entire bucket of balls. Then practice swinging six balls at the same distance you would when using your 5 iron, 3 iron, and then back to what you should when using your 5 wood. Notice when you slowed down your swing, you improved your distance, tempo and consistency.
